Abstract

Clinically, despite the constant evolution of dental restorative materials in terms of physical-mechanical properties, the bonded restorations fail due to adverse conditions that may occur in the oral environment. In addition, the quality of adhesive bonds by application of bonding systems the dental substrate is claimed to be determinant to the restoration longevity. The objective of this project is to perform am in vitro evaluation of the viability and durability of the application of a new restorative system that represents a commercial low-shrinkage composite, based on the silorane molecular structure, associated with a dedicated two-step, self-etching adhesive. Because of different chemical composition of the silorane composite, performing a repair of a pre-existing restoration instead of the complete replacement can be a clinical problem because of the need of using the dedicated adhesive system and also the possibility of chemical incompatibility with methacrylate-based restorative materials. Moreover, the possibility of replacing of a P90 adhesive system component by a simplified methacrylate-based adhesive, without having an impact on the bonded interface deserves evaluation. The hypothesis to be tested considers that the interface adhesive composite/composite at which the methacrylate-based adhesive systems and/or resin composites may provide a stable interface whether a chemical compatibility between the various components was obtained. The proposed experiments investigate the compatibility between these restorative materials through the interaction of different methacrylate- and silorane-based adhesive systems and resins composite on the bond strength and on the structural interface of the composite/composite interface, which will be evaluated in short and medium terms.(AU)
