Abstract

Obesity is a multifactorial disease that can be defined as a pathologic increase of corporal mass of fat associated with a low-intensity chronic inflammatory state. It is considered, nowadays, a worldwide epidemic disorder with relevance for its increase in prevalence and incidence, besides many comorbidities associated, like cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer. Arterial Hypertension is one of the main comorbidities associated with obesity. According to epidemiologic data from the Brazilian Association for the Study of Obesity and The Metabolic Syndrome (ABESO), hypertension is 50% more frequent in obese patients. In order to evaluate the cardiac repercussion of hypertension, echocardiography is a widely used exam. Echocardiography is a noninvasive method to accurately assess the proper activity of the heart according to structural and functional diagnostic of the pump. It also allows the detailed evaluation of dysfunction in adaptive and compensatory mechanisms, through the verification of hypertrophy, diastolic and systolic function, cardiac output, and blood flow. The purpose of this study is the evaluation of cardiac repercussion of arterial hypertension in morbid obesity through echocardiographic alterations. (AU)
