Abstract

With the increasing volume of information available on the web, blogs have become a rich source of information and communication. Besides offering quick information access and exempt specific knowledge such as HTML and CSS by their authors, blogs have a strong feature of allowing interaction with readers who leave comments and sometimes develop habits of frequently accessing them. Some blogs specialize in specific subjects, gaining credibility and becoming references in the area. In this universe, called the blogosphere, unwanted comments have degraded the personal experience of Internet users and can cause economic losses to the blog authors. Some techniques have been proposed for automatic detection of blog comment spam, but the constant evolution of the mechanisms employed by spammers requires more generic and efficient classification methods. Another problem is that due to the recent nature of the problem, there is still no consensus in the literature which are the most appropriate methods and attribute sets. To fill these important gaps, this project aims to analyze the performance of several well-known classification methods, besides proposing and evaluating different models of representation and attribute sets that can be extracted from the blogs and can be used by the machine learning techniques.
