Evaluation of copper and zinc parental supplementation on the immunologic response of Nelore cows and calves

Abstract

This study will evaluate the effect of Cu and Zn injectable mineral supplementation on the immune response and performance of beef cattle on pasture, will be held at the Animal Science and Food Engineering college, USP, Pirassununga Campus-SP. Sixty pregnant cows will be used for insemination, in two treatments, one group control will get a placebo, and other will get mineral supplementation with subcutaneous injection (75 mg and 250 mg of copper zinc). Calves born from these cows will be divided into 4 groups and distributed 15 animals per treatment as described: Treatment 1 (TT): deficient calves born to mothers not supplemented; Treatment 2 (TS): deficient calves born to mothers supplemented; Treatment 3 (ST) supplemented calve (15 mg copper and 50 mg of zinc) born to mothers who were not supplemented, Treatment 4 (SS) supplemented calve (15 mg copper and 50 mg of zinc) born to mothers supplemented. It will be assessed levels of Cu and Zn serum IgG and IgM, ceruloplasmin and phagocytic activity. The experimental cows will be randomized and calves in a 2 x 2 factorial design. Experimental data will analyzed using PROC MIXED of SAS (SAS, 2004). It will be adopted 5% significance level for the statistical interpretation of the tests. (AU)
