Abstract

A solution of complex engineering problems is usually done with the aid of numerical methods such as finite element method (or the boundary element method). In some cases, these numerical methods represent only one step in a larger algorithm, as in topology optimization, in which an amount of material is distributed in an area so as to form a structure that is as rigid as possible and can bear forces imposed on it. In order that the finite element method correctly identifies the stresses and displacements acting on a structure, it is necessary to appropriately divide the domain into a large number of elements. However, when the structures are irregular, the manual setting of elements is costly, so it becomes practical to apply an algorithm of automatic mesh generation. In this project, some techniques for generating two-dimensional meshes will be studied and programmed in MATLAB language. The implemented algorithms will be applied to real engineering problems and compared to free libraries for computational mesh generation.
