Abstract

The objective of this project is to study the popular spetacular theater forms analysed by Hermilo Borba Filho,one of brazilian's modern theater most important critic and playwright. He realized most part of his work in Recife, Pernambuco. The popular spectacles that will be studied are Bumba-meu-boi, Fandango, Mamulengo e Pastoril, under the treatment of the book Espetáculos Populares do Nordeste, wrtighted by Hermilo in the early 1960s end publicized in 1966. This book and another - Fisionomia e Espírito do Mamulengo -, also publicized in 1966,compose the main material of this research. Another Hermilo Borba Filho's theoric and artistic documents are going to be used as support materials, specially the research Apresentação do Bumba-meu-boi - realized for Joaquim Nabuco de Pesquisas Socias Institute and publicized by Imprensa Universitária da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco in 1967 -, the book Diálogo do Encenador from 1964, the lectures Teatro: Arte do Povo and Reflexões sobre a mise en scène publicized in 1947 and the play Sobrados e Mocambos from 1972. It's important to emphasize that the goal of this research is to comprehend Hermilo Borba Filho's thoughts as a theater artist and theorist interested in the confluence between modern theater and popular spetacular forms.
