Abstract

This project aims to carry out a 12-month research, whose actions will be linked to Brunel University London, but will be extended to libraries and archives in London. The focus will be on researching musical theater, whose cultural influences in Brazil are still incipient, although historical analyses on the subject have increased considerably in recent years. This research consists of expanding and deepening initial results obtained in other projects recently funded by Fapesp. Since my research focus was for many years connected to the history of Brazilian popular musical theater, through a recent partnership with Dr. Grant Peterson and the concluding of a regular research project, I felt the urgency of verifying how the genre is conceived today in large urban centers, given its artistic, cultural, commercial and communicative strength, in addition to its historical place in the Brazilian context, in which musicals were constantly presented from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. The project aims to establish the theoretical bases for the writing of two essays that intent to mark the dialogue between the West End musicals and the Brazilian scene, seeking to observe in what aspects Brazilian culture has always been and is fighting against colonization, and in which aspects the recurrent admiration for what is European remains paradoxically an incentive and an obstacle to be overcome. In addition, and not least, the project aims to promote a series of activities with the host university, including the organization of a seminar. (AU)
