Abstract

The critical components in mechanical constructions are generally responsible for bearing heavy loads or internal forces which tend to originate catastrophic failures. An example of this type of mechanical element is the blade spring, sustaining vertical efforts from large automotive vehicles, such as trucks. In order for this crucial structural component to present greater efficiency, its composition must combine different lengths of a certain metallic material, causing such an elaborate structure to concentrate its internal forces on the longitudinal direction of the blades. The SAE 5160 and SAE 6140 steels are widely employed in the making of blade springs. Such metallic materials are classified as engineering steels; after thermal treatment they meet the requirements of load, impact and fatigue resistance. Another material developed in Slovenia - known as 'Superclean steel' - is also suited to be employed as a spring. For the critical components to achieve high performance and considerable durability, such steels must undergo a series of processes which enhance their mechanical properties. The focus of this study is therefore on the influence of conventional thermal treatments, cryogenic treatment and shot peening on the properties involving residual stress, rotary fatigue and resistance to impact originated from spring steels.
