Abstract

Peculiar features of chemistry are investigated by both chemical education and philosophy of chemistry research areas. A preliminary study, developed in our master's dissertation, showed that experimentation and its relation to chemical realism are remarkable features of chemistry according to the ten chemistry doctoral students that were interviewed. From such investigation, other questions were raised: How these peculiar features are built in introductory university chemistry disciplines? Are these features biased by different areas of chemistry, such as organic and physical chemistry? In search for possible answers to these questions, this project aims at investigating the conceptions of university professors and undergraduate students of an introductory chemistry discipline from a research University in São Paulo about peculiar thinking modes and aspects of experimentation ascribed to chemistry. Research methodology includes written questionnaires, interviews with lecturers and students, and analysis of the discipline program. Insights on the challenges and obstacles to incorporate explicit contemporary philosophy of chemistry discussions into chemistry curriculum, especially on specific features of chemistry such as the role of experimentation, are expected.
