Abstract

From this project, we intend to develop a research on representations of the future for the city of São Paulo during the 1950s - a moment marked by significant changes in the field of urbanism, especially the participation of professionals from the humanities on discussions about cities. Preference is given to the representations produced by intellectuals - a category that includes architects, engineers, sociologists, geographers, economists and others. It starts from the principle that the representations of the future was one of the elements of the strategies of intellectuals to build their positions and oppositions in Brazilian intellectual and political fields. In this sense, the intention is to understand how that future was used in discourse about cities and what effects it produced in the trajectories of the intellectuals in question. It is believed that the analysis of these representations of the future, or the horizon of expectations about the cities, may contribute to the understanding of the specificities of the Brazilian intellectual field at that time, especially those which related to town planning, as to clarify certain continuities in urban diagnostics observed up to the present day. Moreover, it allows to realize the social implications of presentification the future, ie how certain representations of the future, produced by privileged agents effectively built this future "in advance".
