Abstract

In the present work, ultrahigh resolution and accurate mass spectrometry techniques such as FTICR MS and HRT MS will be employed to characterize dissolved organic matter in the estuary-lagoon system of Cananéia-Iguape to identify unexplored class of compounds in organic geochemistry. The project is particularly important because this estuarine-lagoon system is one of the most important nurseries for marine life on the planet, and changes in the cycle of dissolved organic matter, as well as the input of pollutants, can definitely compromise the sustainability of the ecosystem. The great resolving power of FTICR MS and MS HRT combined with different ionization techniques (ESI, APPI, APCI) can provide extensive information of the elemental and molecular constituents of dissolved organic matter (DOM). This information can be used to identify homologous series and biomarkers that are potentially useful to better understand geochemical processes, the origin of DOM, and changes related to geographical or anthropogenic aspects such as the presence and location of Valo Grande channel. Kendrick charts, van Kreveler diagrams and Island graphs will be employed as tools of clustering the massive amount of data generated in the mass spectra of DOM samples. Another focus of this research is to evaluate the performance and efficiency of the conventional SPE extraction method and a variant of SPE assisted with electric potential for the isolation and desalting of samples.
