Abstract

When silage is exposed to air fermentation products and other substrates are oxidized by aerobic bacteria, fungi and yeasts. Thus, preventing the entry of oxygen through silo sealing is critical to nutrients' retention and hygienic quality of the silage. The objective of this experiment is evaluate two sealing strategies in horizontal silos in order to control aerobic deterioration of corn silage: 1) Canvas Double-sided 200 µm protected with crushed sugar cane (layer with thickness of 10 cm) and 2) application of sodium benzoate surface 150 g/m2 (diluted in water 1:4) immediately before sealing with double-sided bag 200 micrometers. Four silos will be used with individual capacity of 40 tons. After opening the silos: chemical composition, fermentation profile, counts of microorganisms (fungi, yeasts, lactic acid bacteria, clostridia and aerobic spore), concentrations of mycotoxins, aerobic stability, thermography panel and losses due to aerobic deterioration will be evaluated. The silage will be used to compose dietary treatments, a performance test with high producing dairy cows. The production and milk composition, eating behavior and nutrient digestibility will be evaluated. Clostridia and aerobic spore (mainly represented by Bacillus spp., And Paenibacillus spp.) counts on the feces of animals and the concentration of aflatoxin M1 in milk will also be evaluated. The data will be analyzed by the mixed procedure of SAS.
