Abstract

Povidone-iodine 5% eye drops (polyvinylpyrrolidone) has been used in preoperative cataract surgery to prevent endophthalmitis and is the standard prophylactic action in preventing postoperative endophthalmitis being widely compared with other antibiotic eye drops and their associations. The standard procedure of prophylaxis of postoperative endophthalmitis corresponds to applying a single drop of povidone-iodine 2min before any intraocular surgical procedure. However, few studies have assessed the effectiveness of povidone-iodine 5% eye drops using different dosing regimens to achieve the best bactericidal effect. The aim of this study is to investigate different dosages with respect to the use of povidone-iodine drops to optimize the effectiveness of the agent, ensuring the best exogenous endophthalmitis prophylaxis. One hundred and forty patients were randomly divided into two groups. Group 1 will receive three drops of povidone-iodine 5% eye drops in the conjunctival sac at specific times: 00min, 20min and 28min (time counted from the implementation of the first drop of polyvinylpyrrolidone). Group 2 (control group) will receive two drops of 0.9% saline solution at specific time: 00min and 20min, and a single drop of povidone iodine at the time of 28min. After 30 minutes, it will reap a swab sample at the bottom of the conjunctival sac of patients for comparing the efficacy in reducing of microorganisms in the different groups surveyed. (AU)
