Abstract

This project aims to describe the actions of the National Federation of Deaf Education and Integration (FENEIS) and its deaf leaders in a circuit of institutions related to deafness. I intend to study the role that this institution and its professionals engaged in affirming and legitimizing deafness discourse as a peculiarity in terms of language and culture. FENEIS is often considered the most representative institution of Brazilian deaf community and its emergence reveals a process that established a discontinuity between the categories hearing loss and deafness, what is vital for the production of differentiated normativities among people through hearing. These are interesting anthropological investigations on this subject, which is still incipient among the social sciences. Ethnographic research will be used as research method, performed at FENEIS headquarters in São Paulo and in other places and events usually attended by deaf leaders. It will also be analyzed documents such as reports, brochures and magazines, among others, all of them related to the institution studied on this project. (AU)
