Abstract

Cervical cancer is the third most common type of cancer in women, and still an important cause of death in this group. Its natural history, and the existence of effective screening methods, allows detection and treatment of pre-cancerous lesions. Some cases, despite adequate treatment, develop recurrence or even cervical cancer, showing the need of treatment and follow up. Objective: To evaluate clinical and pathologic factors associated to recurrence of disease in women treated with electrosurgical conization for treatment of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. Methods: Retrospective review of medical records of 342 patients who had undergone conization due to CIN 2 or 3 and have adequate follow up. Chi square test for heterogeneity or trend was used to estimate the strength of the univariate association between the factors under study and each of the two outcome variables. A p value < 0,05 was considered statistically significant. The multivariate associations were estimated by multiple logistic regression analysis (backward stepwise selection). An odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval that did not include the unity was considered stastitically significant. (AU)
