Abstract

I propose to study, in this project, the conversion of western aristocracies to monasticism in the fourth and fifth centuries. As far as I could see, scholars have not paid due attention to this subject. My purpose is to create a prosopographic database of all known aristocrats that converted to monasticism in the period in question, and, at the same time, to evaluate the reliance of the sources. I expect, thus, to understand how monasticism spread among the aristocratic circles and to trace the phases of the acceptance of the former by the latter. In a broader perspective, I expect to contribute significantly to the understanding of the Christianization of aristocracies in late antiquity.
