Abstract

The objectives of this project include the comprehension of the creative process of plastic artist Tomie Ohtake and the evaluation of its importance on the abstract painting of the post-war, post-modernism and contemporary periods in Brazil. Therefore, this project aims to understand the compositional aspects of her work. Besides that, it attempts to assess the new meanings brought by the artist of Japanese origin, on the Brazilian post-war cultural scenario, as well as to identify its importance for the art in Brazil. For this purposes, this project starts from a reflexion on the available information about the life of the artist, as well as the phases of her work, specifically the paintings of abstract nature. In this process, the questions related to her work will be studied, which comprises its development, such as influences of culture and nature, being it Japanese or Brazilian, and their effects on the form-color relationship, in her abstract painting until the present day. In summary, this study intends to contribute theoretically, with new content on the understanding and dimension, in the Brazilian culture, of the work of Tomie Ohtake, which has revealed a lasting and constant transformation in the creative development.
