Abstract

Integrated water resources management plays a pivotal role as it directly affects ecological balance and the various human activities. Monitoring and analyzing variables that are related to artificial eutrophication and water bodies pollution are necessary for water multiple uses maintenance. In Brazil, CONAMA Resolution 357/2005 established classes of water quality based on its main uses, besides minimum and/or maximum values and concentrations allowed in each case. This research will aim at integrating cumulative frequency curves for water quality and quantity. Such curves will be built through secondary data from Brazilian rivers located at different latitudes (in the following states: Paraná, São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Amazonas). The concepts of specific load and discharge will be applied to the data obtained from different sources, including IAP (Paraná Environmental Institute), CETESB (Environmental Company of the São Paulo State), IGAM (Minas Gerais Institute of Water Management), INPA (National Institute for Amazon Research) and IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics). The variables chosen for this study were total phosphorus and nitrogen, coliforms, total suspended solids and discharge. The latter variable is necessary to the evaluation of the loads of the former variables. Although the study of these variables in terms of concentrations is useful for comparisons to water quality standards, the assessment of the loads allows a more thorough analysis in terms of water use and classification. It is expected that this new approach, which seeks to integrate these curves, will aid in integrated water resources management and allow the proposition of additions and improvements to the CONAMA Resolution 357/2005.
