Abstract

Spinal cord injury presents as its consequence the loss or reduction of mobility and sensation below the level of injury. Such loss has various consequences and many of them may be minimized by the practice of the walk with neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) or physical activity. The purpose is to evaluate the muscular activation of the torso during functional tasks of reach and pressure in active and sedentary subjects with physical paraplegia, and also to compare global strength and bone mineral density (BMD). Subjects victim of spinal cord injury will be divided into: sedentary (SCIS, n=10), who practice walk (SCIW, n=10), and physically active (SCIPA, n=10).The control group (C), without spinal cord injury, will be composed of 10 subjects. Muscle activation will be evaluated through electromyography of the surfaces of the muscles longissimus thoracis, iliocostalis, thoracic multifudus and external oblique bilaterally, during tasks of reach and pressure. For the injury groups, we will perform anamnesis, neurological examination of the protocol by ASIA (American Spinal Injury Association), survey of functional independence measurements (FIM) and bone densitometry. All groups will perform tasks of pressure strength, and tasks of reach and pressure. The analysis will be made with the software SPSS (Version 16.0, SPSS Inc.) The level of significance for rejecting the hypothesis of invalidity will be of 5% (p<0,05), with results demonstrated in mean and standard deviation. We hope to observe the benefits of physical activity and walk practice to the promotion of functional independency, and to the improvement of BMD.
