Abstract

The phenomenon of tourism is complex and now very widespread. It involves the interests, investments, desires and expectations of a wide variety of actors, ranging from those responsible for the urban planning of cities to environmental activists, property owners, the hotel sector, old and new residents, tourism and advertising agencies, as well as the tourists themselves. In this study, this phenomenon appears more than anything to be historical, and for this reason, one that carries different meanings, logics and dynamics; it is a phenomenon in movement. To conduct the research, a case study was conducted of the city of Florianópolis, the state capital of Santa Catarina in Southern Brazil, as well as a bibliographic review about theoretical-methodological issues that address the relations between tourism and geography; a study about the history of tourism in Florianópolis; primary and secondary sources were consulted. In this way we sought to more profoundly analyze the idea that so-called tourist destinations are the fruit not only of an "invention," but are reinvented according to the different roles that the tourist activity has performed over the years both in the imaginaries of the actors and in the revenue generated. This led us to develop a periodization of the meanings of tourism in the city of Florianópolis, from the 1930s until today. These meanings, according to our perspective, are understood as discourses and embrace materialization and imaginaries that result, above all, from the amalgam of two orders of the real (the material and the imaginary).
