Abstract

This research aims at gathering ethnographic data pertaining to two sociopolitical contexts in the Americas, the northamerican Northwest and the so-called "higher civilizations", in order to reassess what has been qualified as hierarchy in the description of amerindian political systems. It constitutes the first step of a more comprehensive investigation, comparative in character,in which the amerindian systems described as hierarchical shall be analised as one more case (instead of a particular case)belonging to a wider set, along with all other modes of social assimetry found among Amerindian peoples.
