Among the alternative sources for energy production the use of biomass has become quite interesting, especially in the direction of end uses with higher technological content such as electricity generation, steam production and transportation fuels. The production of fuel ethanol from lignocellulosic residues, such as cereal straw, may be an alternative of renewable energy source. Within this context, the aim of this work is to study the effect of alkaline extrusion followed by enzymatic hydrolysis in wheat straw for ethanol production by co-cultures of Zymomonas mobilis and Pichia stipitis. The wheat straw will be subjected to alkaline extrusion with 10% NaOH and 70°C. After extrusion, the wheat straw will undergo an enzymatic hydrolysis with commercial enzymes, to determine the best temperature, time and pH to release fermentable sugars. The hydrolyzate will be subjected to batch fermentation at 30°C for 72 hours. The effect of pH and agitation for bioethanol production will be evaluated by monocultures of Z. mobilis, monoculture of P. stipitis and co-cultures of Z. mobilis and P. stipitis. (AU)
