Abstract

Still little known and studied, the altarpiece painting "The Last Judgment and the Mass of Saint Gregory" is one of the rare late-medieval works existing in Brazil, shown at the Museum of Art of São Paulo (MASP). According brief (and not documented) information provided by the museum, this painting would have been produced in late the XV century, in Valencia, Spain, to be the central panel of an altarpiece in an abbey in Burgundy, France. The main objective of this project is to seek to confirm these data relating to its provenance and the donation of this work, analyzing it in comparison with other paintings of Burgundy at the late of the fifteenth century. Therefore, we propose a search-site, to be held in the Burgundy region, and more specifically in the city of Dijon (the main city in the area), under the supervision of Prof Dr Daniel Russo, expert on medieval Burgundian art, and professor at the Université de Bourgogne. To do so, we will direct our research in three ways: the search for documentation on this work in Burgundian files, as well as the artistic exchanges between these Valencia and Burgundy at the end of the XV century; the reading of specific literature on relations between Valencia and Burgundy and the altarpiece painting in some libraries in Dijon; and conducting comparative analyses (regarding the iconographic and stylistic aspects) between the work in the MASP with paintings of Valencian origin made in the same time and located in Burgundy (and, more generally, with other paintings altarpiece Burgundian).
