Abstract

The objective of this project is to conduct a broad spectrum in facial myology orders Siluriformes and Gymnotiformes. The study will first redefine the hypotheses of homologies and nomenclature of facial muscles complex, with a detailed documentation of relevant variations in its different subgroups. Posteriorly, the results of the comparative study are summarized in form of discrete characters encoded to be appropriate for incorporation into a phylogenetic analysis. The project will fill a significant gap in understanding the anatomy of important components of freshwater fishes and also provide subsidies for understanding their diversity and evolution. This project will be based on material deposited in institutional collections in Brazil and international, and will include representatives of most subgroups phylogenetically relevant Siluriformes and Gymnotiformes. Outgroups, will be included taxa considered phylogenetically basal of Characiformes and Cypriniformes. The descriptive part of the work will include illustrations of all the relevant structures, using modern techniques of anatomical illustration. Subsequently, these characters will be added to arrays currently available for morphological hypotheses of phylogenetic relationship with broader empirical basis. The results of this work will be an important contribution to the understanding of the complex facial knowledge, which is important in the diversification of the major components of freshwater fishes, providing thus subsidies for elucidating phylogenetic relationships at different levels in these orders.
