Abstract

Known as one of the most complex matrices of chemical characterization, crude oil is considered one of the most important mixtures used on modern society. In the effort of meeting the need for more comprehensive characterization of crude oils and derivatives, the recent field called Petroleomics has resolved and characterized through advanced techniques on mass spectrometry (MS) the composition of thousands of CcHhNnOoSs type compounds in these matrices. Due to the small number of studies in the literature, in special regarding to studies of crude oils of Brazilian sedimentary basins, this project proposes in its first stage, a novel work in the application of SARA fractionation (Saturates, Aromatics, Resins and Asphaltenes) in onshore and offshore crude oils with different API degrees, and studies of these fractions through ultra-high resolution and accuracy MS technique of Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) using electrospray (ESI) as the ionization source . As scientific and technological innovation is proposed in a second step the characterization of emulsified crude oils by ESI FT-ICR MS, seeking an investigation of the chemical composition that influences the formation and stabilization of emulsions in crude oils, revealing again the study's originality, as there are no reports in the literature of that kind of study with Brazilian crude oils at the moment. Therefore, this project aims by its two steps, to scientific and technological innovations in all upstream steps of the oil industry, mainly involving the exploration, drilling, production and transportation, with the development of procedures at the forefront of knowledge aimed at national petrochemical matrices.
