Abstract

One of the most debated issues in Earth sciences concerns the processes of intrusion and crystallization of magmas at different crustal depths. Large mafic-ultramafic complexes provide a unique opportunity to characterize the evolution of melts during their emplacement and cooling and to understand the processes of melt-country rock interaction. The proposed project wants to provide new petrological and geochemical constraints on the evolution of mafic-ultramafic complexes thanks to an historical international partnership between Italian and Brazilian universities. We propose to study in detail two mafic-ultramafic complexes cropping out in the Brasilia Belt: the Niquelândia and Cana Brava complexes (central Goiás, Brazil). Field work and samples collection will be performed during the two years of the project, with particular interest on septa and lenses of exotic rocks within the complexes. Petrographic and geochemical analysis will be carried out to determinate the conditions of intrusion (temperature and pressure) and to evaluate the degree of crustal contamination in the parental melts. The study of exotic metamorphic rocks will lead to the reconstruction of their thermal history and their interaction with the intruded melts. Rb/Sr, Sm/Nd and U-Pb isotopic analyses will be performed to provide further constraints on crustal contamination processes and to determine the age of the Cana Brava complex and its relationship with the age of the Niquelândia intrusion.
