Evaluation of physical fitness by anaerobic threshold in smokers

Abstract

Cigarette smoke cause deleterious health effects which reduces significantly smoker's physical fitness and may interfere in the daily activities performance. However, there are no evidences which analyze the smoker's physical fitness by anaerobic threshold. Aim: To evaluate and to compare the anaerobic threshold (AT), the maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and the intensity of the exercise corresponding to VO2max (iVO2max) of smokers and nonsmokers. Methods: Smokers aged between 30 and 50 years, with normal lung function attested by spirometry, will be submitted to a treadmill progressive exhaustive test to determinate the AT, VO2max and iVO2max. Non smoking subjects with similar characteristics will be submitted to the same procedure. Statistical Analysis: Statistical analysis was performed with GraphPad Prism 3.0 (GraphPad Software, Inc., San Diego, USA). Normality of data distribution will be verified with the Shapiro-Wilk test and the results will be described as mean ± standard deviation, except for non-normal distribution variables, which will be described as median (interquartile range 25-75). For intergroup analysis (smokers and nonsmokers) will be used the unpaired t test or Mann-Whitney test depending on the data normality. Differences were considered significant at P < 0,05.
