Abstract

The objectives will be to evaluate clinical and histopathological aspects of topical application of copaiba oil on the healing process of experimentally induced wounds in lumbar and metacarpal areas of healthy horses. Six adult horses will be used. Eight wounds will be surgically produced on each horse: two wounds cranial to the sacrum on each side of the lumbar region and two wounds close to the proximal epiphysis of the metacarpus on the lateral aspect of each forelimb. The wounds on the right lumbar region and the wounds of the metacarpal of the right forelimb will be used for macroscopic evaluation, the other for histopathological evaluation. The experimental lesions will be treated daily with copaiba oil, whereas saline solution was used in control lesions. Macroscopic and histopathological analyses will be performed on tissue harvested at 3, 7, 14, and 21 days, In these moments will be biopsied for histopathologic evaluation. Complete healing time for all wounds was recorded. We will study the parameters related to necrosis, hemorrhage, edema, infiltration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and monocytes and fibrosis.
