Abstract

Agricultural production is subject to several constraints, such as legal restrictions imposed by the Forest Code. It restricts the area used for agricultural production, which implies costs for producers. However, this cost can vary among farmers because of several inherent characteristics of the area in which the property is located and/or farmer such as weather conditions, productivity, crops harvested, performance (efficiency in transforming inputs into outputs), human capital and other factors. In this context, the aim of this study is to estimate the opportunity cost of the area occupied by the Legal Reserve and its determinants. To this end, the behavior of the opportunity cost of the municipalities of the state of São Paulo and state of Mato Grosso will be confronted for the years 1995/1996 and 2006. This study will use the methodology proposed by Zhou, Ang and Poh (2006) to calculate the opportunity cost. Subsequently, a model of spatial econometrics will be used to analyze the determinants of the opportunity cost of the area occupied by the legal reserve and compare the cost between the two states analyzed. The results will support government actions to encourage the conservation the area with legal reserve for given characteristics of properties analyzed. (AU)
