Comparison of the effect of hospitalization on the respiratory and peripheral muscles strength of elderly and adults not restrict to bed

Abstract

Objective: To compare the effect of hospitalization on respiratory and peripheral muscle strength, and on functionality of elderly and young adults patients not restricted to bed. Methods: This prospective controlled study will assess the strength of respiratory muscles and peripherals muscles, and the functionality in 60 consecutive patients (30 elderly and 30 young adults, matched for body mass index and type of disease: benign and malignant) not restricted to bed. All patients will be assessed until 24 hours after admission as to their medical history, habits (physical activity), and addictions (smoking and drinking). On the same day, and after seven (7) days of hospitalization, the lung function (by spirometry), respiratory muscle strength (by manometry), peripheral muscle strength (by dynamometry) and functionality (the Barthel index) will be assessed. After descriptive and normality analysis, the comparison will be made between groups by t test or Mann-Whitney test. The level of significance will be set to 5%.Expected results: The hospitalization triggers muscle weakness, fatigue, and functional impairment, however, it still unknown if this effect is higher in elderly than in young adults. Our hypothesis is that in elderly patients, the effect of hospitalization is more deleterious than in young adult patients not restricted to bed.
