Abstract

The hemangioblastomas are rare benign neoplasms that correspond to less than 3% of all intramedullary spinal cord tumors. Being characterized by its intense vascularization and high incidence of lipidic cells, they are commonly found in the spinal cord and cerebellum. They are most commonly located at the cervical region(40 % -60 % ), followed by the thoracic(40-50 % ), and lumbar regions (5-10 % ), and finally at the cauda equina (less than 1 % ).Diagnosis is possible by means of magnetic resonance that shows marked contrast on T2-wheighted images. Although surgical excision is usually considered to be the treatment of choice for the majority of patients, post-operative results vary significantly in the literature. Thus, the objective of this project is to evaluate the efficacy of the surgical treatment employed at a tertiary institution, the State university of Campinas - UNICAMP, and compare it to the results described in the literature. Data analysis includes age, sex and race, size of the lesion, anatomical location and patients' pre and post-operative status and was collected retrospectively from patient's protocols at our institution.
