Abstract

Incrustations of fossil vermetids found in the limitary pontoons from two beaches of the island of São Francisco do Sul (SC) had its elevation measured in the field in relation to the colonial polychaete that now occupies their biozone and after this were subjected to sampling. This project aims to characterize the 20 samples collected regarding to: 1. morphology, texture, mineralogy and biological associations, via optical and electronic microscopy and X-ray diffractometry; 2. chronology, via AMS 14C dating analyzes; and 3. chemical (Mg / Ca and Sr / Ca reasons ) and isotopic (´13C and ´18O) compositions via mass spectrometry. The main objectives of the project are to detail the curve of the relative sea level variation along the Holocene in this region based on the dating and leveling data, and discuss, on the basis of chemical and isotopic results, the possible changes in paleossalinity and paleotemperature that occurred, in the same period, in the coastal waters. The overall goal is to contribute to the study of changes in coastal circulation, and by extension, of climatic changes, occurred in the Holocene in southern Brazil. The achievement of the goal and of the objectives proposed also entails the realization of broad literature review either of the analytical methods to be employed, and its interpretative meaning, either of the data previously available in this and others regions of Brazil and even in others parts of the world.
