Abstract

Among the diseases that affect the joints of horses, septic arthritis is considered the most serious. It can result in rapid destruction of articular cartilage and joint in the presence of osteomyelitis, there may be an irreversible loss of the articular surface, considered as a potentially very serious condition with a mortality rate from 15% to 50% of cases. Treatment of infectious arthritis has as main objective, to eliminate the causing microorganisms and remove harmful products of synovial inflammation and fibrin that can damage the articular cartilage. In this study, we used 10 horses were distributed into two groups, Group gentamicin plasma (GP), and intra-articular gentamicin Group (GIA). Each animal receives 6.6 mg / kg gentamicin intravenously in standard time every 24 hours for seven consecutive days. Be realized collections of synovial fluid and the metacarpal phalangeal joint of the right forelimb before the start of the experiment (T0) and after 6 hours (T6), 12 hours (T12) and every 24 hours (D1) during the seven days of therapy antimicrobial (D2, D3, D4, D5, D6, D7). The concentration of gentamicin in synovial fluid will be determined by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Therefore, this study seeks to determine the concentration of gentamicin in synovial fluid, thereby establishing how long that, when administered intravenously, remains at concentrations above the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), to verify whether the treatment is feasible, and how many days of the same are required to achieve the minimum inhibitory concentration of gentamicin in the metacarpal phalangeal joint of horses, in order to eliminate the infection, concomitantly evaluating their systemic side effects of continued use of the drug.
