Abstract

We propose to study the origin, development and current situation of stock markets in Brazil and in Latin America, in the sense of evaluating the growing role of Brazil in the world's financial market. The city of São Paulo increasingly consolidates its position as the main financial center of the Brazilian territory and, on this view, we look forward to research how much this centrality also applies to the Latin American context. We will analyze and problematize the growth of "Bolsa de Valores, Mercadorias e Futuros de São Paulo" (BM&F Bovespa S.A.), comparing and linking it to the development of other stock markets in Brazil and in Latin America. Considering the relevance of information and finance as ascending variables in the current period, we will evaluate how the Brazilian stock market prepares itself to put São Paulo progressively as a heavy participant - and main Latin American representative - in the world financial market, always taking into account the consequences of such centralization of finance and information to the unequal distribution of resources in a territory and questioning the constant disregard for the territorial implications of financial markets in the contemporary world.
