Abstract

This research project seeks to identify the fundamentals of Critical Geography movement in its Marxist perspective in the Department of Geography, Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences (FFLCH), University of São Paulo, during the civil-military dictatorship in Brazil (1964-1985). This movement is relevant for the analysis in the way that we observe the formation of a critical rupture internal to academic production in Human Geography, against the apparent isolation of Geography course in relation to the theoretical changes that other departments in FFLCH passed and by which were suppressed by the political system current at the time. This work aims then to analyze the hypothesis in Silva (1983), Carlos (1993), Moraes (1985), Santos (1978), Scarin (2000), according to which the critical mass renewal of geographical science in Brazil goes through dissertations and theses produced in Human Geography at USP. Therefore, we study such works of intellectual formation, presented during the period defined in the Department of Geography at the university, in addition to their inclusion in the political context of civil-military dictatorship and the struggle against the dictatorship - so characteristic of FFLCH. Such a reading will be held from the use of the methodology proposed by Candido (1981), for searching and identifying traditions of thought from the intrinsic linkage between author (his intellectual trajectory), current thinking (about which theoretical and methodological bases each one builds its work), work (academic production of each author) and public (and ruptures dialogues with their peers).
