Abstract

Despite the technological advances made in the field of implant dentistry, oral implant therapy in patients with impaired bone healing ability such as diabetes, irradiated bone, grafted bone, and osteoporosis is still challenging. To stimulate and/or accelerate implant osseointegration, two major strategies are possible. On the one hand supporting and enhancing the intrinsic bone regeneration mechanisms at the tissue-implant interface, on the other hand guiding the osseointegration process via an extrinsic approach. The application of high-frequency loading as an anabolic stimulus for the implant osseointegration biological process represent a strategy with promising, tough untapped potential for implant therapy in complex bone template cases.Although research on bone-implant interface and implant surfaces have increased over the last decades, there is still a lack of studies that take account specific characteristics of the patient in the manufacture of implants. This type of research may generate knowledge that will enable the dentist perform customized services in the field of implantology. (AU)
