Abstract

Secular changes in direction and intensity of the geomagnetic field can be used to infer about the mechanisms of field generation in the Earth's outer core. In this project we will analyze the variations, in time and space, of the Earth's magnetic field over South America, where the dipolar components of the geomagnetic field are anomalously weak. This region, one of the most important windows for understanding the magnetohydrodynamics in the in outer core and in the core-mantle boundary, is still poorly covered by data. We will investigate: (a) variations of intensity and inclination of the geomagnetic field in historical materials (e.g. bricks and tiles) of South America, especially in southern Brazil, northern Argentina and southern Bolivia (Jesuit Missions of the XVII-XVIII centuries); (b) the response of local and global geomagnetic field models to the new data for South America, including the experimental data to be obtained in the thesis.
