Abstract

This project aims to improve the outlook for fuel and chemical production based on biomass starting materials by working on the most significant challenge for this industry which is the development of low-cost and high-yield technology for the processing of lignocellulose. Herein we propose to establish an original and sustainable approach towards the selective conversion of lignocellulosic material and bio-based platform molecules by employing and combining electrochemical methods with the use of protecting groups and homogeneous catalysis. We outline herein a four part study with target reactions that utilize each component of biomass (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin).
