Abstract

The sintering has an enormous technological importance due to its extensive use in the production of ceramics and in the powder metallurgy, which defines the performance of the properties (e.g. electrical, magnetic, optical, thermal, mechanical, etc.) in the final material by the modification of the micro / nanostructure. Despite the great variety of sintering processes, the active sintering has great advantages, particularly about to the cost, decrease in sintering temperature and high densities achieved by the samples. But the understanding about the active sintering is still incomplete, mainly by the unknown of how the processes of active sintering occur. In this study, it is proposed to understand the processes involved in the active sintering by the direct visualization of phenomena by in-situ transmission electron microscopy, in atomic scale. For this proposes, it will be used the ceramic systems SnO2, SnO2-CoO and SnO2-MnO2. These materials will be studied by ex-situ experiments (production of pellets, sintering and study of the sintered samples by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy) and in-situ experiments (sintering into a transmission electron microscope). In this study, we intend to unveil the mechanisms of active sintering by the direct observation of phenomena, with possible formulations of quantitative and qualitative models of the process.
