Abstract Reduce anthropogenic CO2 emission is important for minimize global warming. Thus, arise the necessity of technologies that allow capturing and sequestering CO2 emission, which would allow the sustainable use of fossil fuels in order to maintain the current energy demand. Carbon capture and sequestration technologies (CCS) are investigated for those purposes. Mineral sequestration is the safest long term solution for CO2 emissions reduction. This technology is a chemical reaction between CO2 and alkaline metals from silicate rocks to produce a solid carbonate, where is fixed effectively. Moreover, the products from the mineralization could have application in the market, making this technology more attractive. Other advantage is the large availability of silicate rocks in the world; moreover, the chemical reaction is exothermic. In Brazil, researches are development in geological sequestration; however, there are large amounts of Brazilian silicate rocks, which can be used to mineral sequestration. In this respect, is necessary an experimental study of chemical conversion of CO2 into a solid carbonate, evaluating: leach process, kinetics, chemical input and its regeneration. Many researches have recognized that the best manner for mineral sequestration is the pH swing process. This is carried out at low pressure and moderate-temperatures conditions. In this project, will be realized an experimental study of this process. The tests are planning mean orthogonal arrays, where will be assessed the levels and factors identified for each stages, in order to obtain the best operating conditions. | |
