Abstract

Graphene is an allotrope of carbon that acts as a 2D building block. Due to its exceptional electrical, thermal, optical, and mechanical properties; it is considered an important material for the 21st century and has received increasing attention from researchers. Nowadays, graphene has being studied by almost all fields of science and engineering. Recent progresses have shown that graphene-based materials can have a profound impact on electronic and optoelectronic devices, chemical sensors, nanocomposites and energy storage. In this context, the candidate, who has been investigating graphene and derivatives during his postdoctoral work with the aim of developing sensors based on these materials, wishes to apply for an internship abroad in a laboratory dedicated to research this subject. This will allow him to improve his knowledge on this topic and to acquire skills that will help him in his future work. It also represents the opportunity to get experience in a renowned international research center and be part of the group of Professor Héctor Abruña, who has made significant contributions on graphene studies. The proposal for the internship is focused on the study of adsorption of probe molecules and nanoparticles on graphene and graphene oxide in order to understand the reactivity of these materials and the interaction with other species. In these studies graphene, prepared by chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and graphene oxide, obtained by chemical exfoliation, will be employed. The proposed studies will involve the use of spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques, particularly Raman Spectroelectrochemistry and Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy (SECM). (AU)
