Abstract

Adriaan van Roomen (1561-1615), mathematician and physician, published in 1605 the work Mathesis Polemica which in first part discusses the classification of mathematical disciplines, stretch that is the subject of the doctoral thesis entitled "The Classification of Mathematical Disciplines and Mathesis Universalis in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries: a study from the work of Adriaan van Roomen's Mathesis Polemica". In this project, we propose an exchange at the Faculty of Sciences of Lisbon University (FCUL) and the Centre for the History of Science and Technology (CIUHCT) under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Henrique Leitão. By means of meetings, presentation of seminar, participate in activities performed by CIUHCT and visiting libraries intend to deepen some themes being studied in the doctoral project seeking to understand a little more about four subjects: (i) the status of mathematics and the quaestio of certitudine mathematicarum, (ii) the mathematical instrumentation, (iii) the astronomy and their relationships with mathematics and (iv) the scientific activity and its relationship to the political-religious context.
