Abstract Active learning environments contribute to the involvement of students in the teaching process. This approach gives the students the main responsibility for their own learning. The Biochemistry: Structure and Metabolism of Biomolecules course aims to promote the meaningful learning through an active learning environment. For this, two main strategies are used: study period (SP) and group discussion (GD): The goal of this project is to analyze how the active learning environment provided in this course interferes in the motivation, learning strategies, expectations, performance and students' evaluations of effectiveness of teaching. A pilot study about the influences of this active learning environment in the motivation and learning strategies was presented in this project. This study showed that more than 68% of the students presented high motivation (clusters I, II and IV), however the use of different learning strategies was observed only about 30% (cluster I). The results of this pilot study are promising and more detailed understanding of the effects of this active learning environment contributes to the development of research about teaching practices that allow students to realize their responsibility to lifelong learning and continuing professional development. | |
