Abstract

The objective of this project is to analyze the plays: Longa Noite de Cristal (1969), Corpo a Corpo (1970) and Nossa Vida em Família (1971), by Oduvaldo Vianna Filho, with the intention to observe the aesthetic line chosen by the playwright in the period following the issuance of the Institutional Act Number Five decree. After 1968, the Brazilian society went through several sociopolitical changes as a result of the issuance of the AI-5. One of these changes was the hardening of the censorship imposed on Brazilian artists. As a result, the playwright Oduvaldo Vianna Filho (Vianinha) modified his creation process, adopting the aesthetic theory proposed by Georg Lukács, which came to be known as Critical Realism, and leaving behind theories by Bertolt Brecht and Erwin Piscator that had previously influenced his productions. This way, Vianinha, who dreamed with a communist society, saw dictatorship as an obstacle for the realization of this dream, which became more impossible each day. Also during this period, the television became the main mass communication medium, which inspired Vianna Filho to dedicate a lot of time studying the role of intellectuals who worked for television and for the advertisement industry. Within this context, the objective of this project is to analyze plays that deal with the subjects of: the relationship between TV and advertisement; and how capitalism negatively affects family relationships. Vianinha created these plays at the end of his career. Therefore, they represent the playwright's creative thought process until the completion of his masterpiece Rasga Coração.
