Abstract

Since the first identification of the virus in 1972, the disease caused by canine coronavirus (CCoV) has not been adequately investigated, and the role that the virus plays in canine enteric illness has not been well established. Only after the emergence in 2002 of SARS in humans, studies have new attention been focused on coronaviruses. Moreover, recently a new serotype on CCoV-IIb related to TGEV virus was reported. A lack of information about CCoV in Brazil move our laboratory, together with Dr. Nicola Decaro, University of Bari, Italy, to initiate studies on CCoV molecular characterization and further isolation in feces samples from suspect dogs.
