Abstract

This research project aims to analyze the historical process of creation and functioning of the Academy for Advanced Studies, founded by Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute (IHGB) in 1915. This institution of higher learning has emerged as an initiative to promote the scientific studies in the fields of Politics, History and Sociology. In 1919, was reformulated to meet the training of secondary teachers, becoming the College of Letters and Philosophia, maintaining the characteristics of incentive to research and "disinterested studies." In this sense, we propose to consider the IHGB as a place of active power in the educational field, and how innovative instance in troubled scenario of Brazilian higher education. For this research covers the temporality of existence the Academy for Advanced Studies and the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, between 1915-1922. (AU)
