Abstract

Most of the studies performed in our laboratory are involved with the respiratory modulation of sympathetic activity. Some of these studies showed changes in the respiratory-sympathetic coupling in the experimental model of hypertension induced by chronic intermittent hypoxia. After surgical removal of baroreceptors [sinoaortic denervation (SAD)] rats present high levels of sympathetic activity and arterial pressure which is normalized few days later. However, there is no information about the neural changes in the generation and control of respiratory activity after SAD and its possible influence on the control of the sympathetic activity. In previous studies, we found changes in the basal respiratory pattern in conscious rats and the sympathetic activity was lower in the late expiratory phase in rats 10 days after SAD in the working heart-brainstem preparation. Therefore, it is possible that SAD is an appropriated experimental model for the study of neural plasticity of the respiratory network which may contribute to preventing increases in sympathetic activity and hypertension in these animals. We hypothesized that the electrophysiological properties of the sympathetic and respiratory neurons are different on the 1st and 10th day after SAD. To test this hypothesis we will use the working heart-brainstem preparation to record the sympathetic and respiratory nerves and neurons in juvenile rats submitted to SAD. (AU)
