Abstract

The Atlantic meridional overturning circulation is a key component of the climate system. Conceptual models suggest that periods of abrupt climate change of the late Quaternary should be associated to marked modifications in the geometry of deep-water masses in the western equatorial Atlantic. Nevertheless, the verification of this hypothesis remains elusive, mainly due to the lack of suitable paleoceanographic records. In this project we will use oxygen and carbon isotopic results from benthic foraminifera to: (i) reconstruct deep-water geometry in the western equatorial Atlantic during the late Quaternary; (ii) investigate the presence/absence of a relationship between changes in deep-water mass geometry and modifications in the strength of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation; and (iii) suggest a mechanism able to couple both phenomena.
