Abstract

The monophyly of Batoidea is largely accepted and it is considered the superorder most diverse whithin Chondrichthyes, with about 640 valid species. The double copulatory organ (mixopterygia) is considered a synapomorphy of Chondrichthyes. The mixopterygia of family Rajidae is widely used in phylogenic and taxonomic study, being many taxons defined by shaped of mixopterygia components. However the morphology and systematic relevance of mixopterygia structures of all other batoids are still precariously known. The aim of the present project has as its main goal to describe and compare the mixopterygia internal and external components of members belonging to family of Batoidea. Detaled drescription of the mixopterygia will be used to recognize anatomic patterns and provide relevant phylogenetic information. By doing so by doing so, we hope to improve our understanding of the morphology and anatomy of mixopterygia of Batoidea. (AU)
