Abstract

In this project the thermodynamic properties of moderately diluted electrolyte solutionsare investigated by considering a continuum model. By studying the thermodynamic restrictionsimposed on the chemical potential of a constituent of the solution, the functional dependence of chemical potential will be associated with the ideal and non-ideal behavior of electrolyte solutions, emphasizing the influence of the solution mass gradient upon the intermolecular interactions. Moreover, a system of non-linear differential equations, previously obtained from balance and constitutive equations, will be solved by accounting an electrochemical experiment. In this experiment, two planar electrodes, mantained at a constant potential difference, are immersed in a stationary electrolyte solution with heatconduction, diffusion, and chemical reactions. Resolving this boundary value problem,explicit expressions for concentration, electric potential and temperature, as functions ofspace and time, will be deduced and compared with experimental data available in theliterature. The results obtained in this project will be useful for verifying the validity ofthe constitutive model proposed in Martina Costa Reis' PhD thesis, and also for the thermodynamicmodeling of bio and geological media, electrorheological fluids, and industrialprocesses.
